Privacy Policy

This website collects as little data as possible. Here is what it does collect, why I need it and what your rights are.

Controller

This policy follows the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Hosting and server logs

The website and its content management system run on my own server at Hostinger ⚠️ [add data centre location]. When a page is requested, the server processes technically necessary data such as IP address, time, requested address and browser details. This is needed to deliver the page and protect it from abuse. Fonts and all other parts of the page are served from my own server, not from Google or other providers.

Visitor statistics (Umami)

To see which content is read, I use Umami, self-hosted on my own server. Umami sets no cookies, stores no full IP addresses and builds no profiles across websites. It records things like the page viewed, the referring page, country, device type and browser. The data is not shared with third parties. If “Do Not Track” is enabled in your browser, you are not counted.

Colors from the weather

When this feature is on, the website adapts its colors to the weather at your approximate location. To do so, my server sends your IP address to one of these services to determine your approximate location (city or region): freeipapi.com, ipwho.is or ipapi.co. With these rough coordinates it asks Open-Meteo for the current weather. The result is cached briefly, but not stored permanently and not linked to you. The requests are made by my server; your browser does not connect to any of these services.

You can turn the feature off at any time with the switch in the menu. Then nothing is looked up.

Contact form

If you write to me through the form, I store your name, email address and message and receive them by email. I use this information only to reply to you and delete it when it is no longer needed for that. To prevent spam, the number of messages per IP address is briefly limited.

If you sign up for the newsletter, I store your email address and chosen language. The sign-up only becomes valid once you confirm it via the link in the confirmation email (double opt-in). Every email contains an unsubscribe link; after that your address is no longer used.

Cookies

This website sets no cookies for advertising or tracking. There are only three cookies, each set only when you choose something yourself:

theme: remembers whether you chose light or dark mode.
weather: remembers whether you turned off the colors from the weather.
likes: remembers which posts you liked, so a second click takes the like back. Only an anonymous number per post is counted.

You can delete or block cookies in your browser at any time. The website keeps working; only your choices are not remembered.

Embedded videos

Some posts may contain videos from YouTube or Vimeo. They are only loaded when you click “Load video”. Only then is data such as your IP address sent to YouTube (Google) or Vimeo, including to countries outside Switzerland and the EU such as the USA. I use their privacy-friendly variants (youtube-nocookie.com, Vimeo with “Do Not Track”). The privacy policies of Google and Vimeo apply.

Links to other websites

Links to other websites, for example GitHub, LinkedIn or Medium, only open them when you click. Their own privacy policies apply there.

Your rights

You can ask at any time which data I process about you and have it corrected or deleted. Just write to the email address above. If you believe I am not processing your data correctly, you can contact the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or, as a visitor from the EU, the data protection authority in your country.

Changes

I update this policy when something about the website changes. The version published here applies.
